One common concern people in Atlanta have about braces is the lisp that comes with them. Dr. Caroline Ceneviz of Chamblee Orthodontics is here to assure you that much like any of the other inconveniences that come with braces, they are only temporary. A lisp is a common side effect of braces according to Dr. Ceneviz. It’s caused by the tongue being unable to touch the back teeth because of the brackets and wires. This can make S sounds especially difficult to pronounce.
If you have developed a lisp after having braces attached have no fear, as this is a common occurrence and usually goes away on its own after a little time. The tongue is a very adaptable muscle. So with a little bit of practice, you should be able to get rid of your lisp in no time.
If you are finding that your lisp continues to linger there are a few things you can do to help get rid of it. You can try tongue exercises like this one: place the tip of your tongue behind your top front teeth and slide it back and forth for about 30 seconds.
