Palatal Expansion in Convington, GA
Creating Space for Healthy Growth
When your child’s upper jaw is too narrow, there may not be enough room for developing permanent teeth or for the upper and lower teeth to fit together properly. Palatal expansion is an orthodontic treatment designed to gradually widen the upper jaw while your child is still growing.
At Chamblee Orthodontics, we don’t automatically recommend expanders. Rather, we carefully evaluate your child’s teeth, bite, jaw development, facial growth, and overall orthodontic needs to determine whether expansion would provide a meaningful benefit. Our goal is simple: choose the right treatment at the right time to support your child’s smile as they grow.
What Is Palatal Expansion?
The palate forms the roof of the mouth and is part of the upper jaw. During childhood and adolescence, the upper jaw is still developing. When it’s narrower than it should be, an orthodontic expander may be used to gradually create additional width. Rather than simply moving individual teeth, palatal expansion is intended to influence the developing upper jaw.
Because every child grows differently, not every Covington child with crowded or misaligned teeth needs expansion. A comprehensive orthodontic evaluation helps us understand what is contributing to the problem, so we can recommend the right treatment.
Why Might My Child Need a Palatal Expander in Covington, GA?
Palatal expansion is most commonly recommended for growing children and adolescents with a narrow upper jaw. Depending on your child’s individual development, expansion may help address:
- A narrow upper jaw: Expansion can increase width when the upper jaw is constricted.
- Crossbite: A narrow upper jaw can cause some upper teeth to sit inside the lower teeth rather than outside them.
- Crowding: Creating additional room may help address limited space for the teeth.
- Developing permanent teeth: Expansion may create needed space as adult teeth begin to emerge.
- Growth and function: Jaw development and the way the upper and lower teeth fit together are considered when planning treatment.
When appropriate, we may also consider breathing and airway concerns as part of your child’s overall growth and orthodontic evaluation. These considerations are only one part of a broader assessment; not every child with breathing concerns needs palatal expansion.
When Is the Right Time for Palatal Expansion?
Palatal expansion is most commonly used while a child or adolescent is still growing. This allows us to work with the natural development of the upper jaw. This doesn’t mean every child should receive an expander at a certain age. Two children of the same age can have very different orthodontic needs and stages of development.
At Chamblee Orthodontics in Covington, GA, we evaluate each child individually. If expansion could provide a meaningful benefit, we’ll explain why we recommend it, what we hope to accomplish, and how it fits into your child’s overall orthodontic treatment plan.
What Types of Palatal Expanders Do We Offer?
There is more than one way to expand a developing upper jaw. Chamblee Orthodontics offers both traditional fixed expanders and Invisalign® Palatal Expanders.
Traditional Fixed Expanders
A traditional palatal expander is fixed in place and gradually widens the upper jaw over time. Because the appliance remains in the mouth throughout this phase of treatment, parents and children do not have to remember to put it back in after removing it.
Traditional expanders can be an effective option for many growing children, but whether one is appropriate depends on your child’s anatomy and orthodontic needs.
Invisalign® Palatal Expanders
Invisalign Palatal Expanders offer another approach to expansion. Instead of a single traditional fixed appliance, the system uses a series of custom-made expanders designed to gradually expand the upper jaw.
This flexibility allows us to recommend a certain approach based on your child’s age, growth, anatomy, and specific treatment needs, not one solution for everyone. During your child’s evaluation, we can explain what we recommend and why.
What Does the Palatal Expansion Process Look Like?
Your child’s treatment starts with understanding how their teeth and jaws are developing.
1. Comprehensive Evaluation
We evaluate your child’s teeth, bite, jaw development, and growth. Digital scans and 3D imaging may be used when appropriate to give us a more detailed picture of their anatomy and orthodontic needs.
2. Personalized Expansion Plan
If expansion is recommended, we’ll determine which type of expander is appropriate and develop a treatment plan based on your child’s growth and anatomy.
3. Gradual Expansion and Monitoring
The upper jaw is gradually expanded over time. Throughout the process, we carefully monitor your child’s progress and make adjustments as needed.
Expansion is only one part of the bigger picture. We continue evaluating how your child’s bite and jaws are developing so treatment remains aligned with their overall orthodontic goals.
Does Your Child Need a Palatal Expander?
The best way to know is through an orthodontic evaluation. If palatal expansion is appropriate, we’ll walk you through the options and what to expect. If it isn’t, we’ll discuss what other approach may better support your child’s orthodontic needs.
